YOUR ROOF MIGHT NEED A CLEAN
Moss often starts in shaded areas and develops gradually. At first it's easy to overlook. Later you may notice thicker patches or debris washing towards gutters.
Moss doesn't automatically prove your roof is damaged.
It can, however, collect moisture and organic debris. Loose growth may contribute to gutter blockages, and a heavily contaminated surface can make it harder to see the condition of the tiles beneath.
The useful question isn't simply, “How do we remove it?” It's “What condition is this roof in, and which treatment is suitable?”
Shaded, damp conditions can encourage moss, algae and lichen. The significance varies with the roof material and condition.
Debris from the roof may restrict drainage and contribute to overflow during rain.
Moss and dirt can make serviceable tiles look more weathered than they are. Cleaning may reveal a much fresher original surface.
Cleaning doesn’t mend cracked tiles, failing mortar or problems below the roof surface. Those concerns require their own assessment.
Don't assume the worst because you can see moss. Start with the roof's actual condition.
Ask Us About MossOUR APPROACH
Good roof cleaning is more than spraying the surface and hoping for the best. The roofing material, existing condition, contamination, access and surrounding areas all matter.
Consider the visible tile condition, material, moss growth and areas that may affect the cleaning method. An obvious defect may require further investigation first.
Plan safe access and protect surrounding surfaces where appropriate. Identify how moss and debris will be managed during the work.
Remove unwanted contamination using the agreed method appropriate to the substrate and its condition.
Where specified, an appropriate biocide may be applied in accordance with its product instructions to discourage organic regrowth. Permanent prevention isn’t promised.
Inspect the completed agreed work and clear the debris from the agreed work areas. Any outstanding concerns should be explained.
Review relevant completion information and explain appropriate aftercare, treatment limitations and any maintenance advice for your roof.
The right method matters more than a one-size-fits-all promise.
Coating preparation has separate requirements. It does not determine the method for every standalone roof clean.
THE METHOD SHOULD FIT THE ROOF
Roof tiles vary in material, age, finish and condition. A treatment that's appropriate for one property may not be for another.
That's why cleaning decisions should be based on the specific roof rather than an automatic method chosen before inspection.
Your roof isn't identical to your neighbour's. The cleaning approach shouldn't be assumed to be identical either.
Ask About My Roof TypeThese can collect substantial moss and surface dirt. Their age and existing condition should be considered before cleaning.
Clay surfaces vary. The tile type, finish and condition affect the suitability of a proposed method.
Not all materials are suitable for every cleaning technique or subsequent coating system. Some require specialist assessment.
Loose or cracked tiles, deteriorated areas or suspect materials must not be ignored to push ahead with cleaning.
No universal cleaning method is right for all roofs. We’ll explain the appropriate method proposed for your property. Some roof-coating preparation systems have separate requirements.
If suspect asbestos-containing materials are found, work must stop for appropriate specialist advice.
Discuss existing tile defectsSEE THE DIFFERENCE
A roof covered in moss and surface dirt can look significantly older than the tiles beneath. Once contamination has been removed using a suitable method, the visual difference may be striking.
But a cleaning comparison should show cleaning — not a new coloured coating.
Actual results depend on the roof and treatment. Drag or use arrow keys to compare.
Before: Visible moss, lichen, algae and accumulated surface dirt.
After: Same roof tiles after cleaning, with their original material and colour still apparent.
Cleaning removes surface contamination. RENOTEC coating is a separate service that can restore or change the colour of compatible roof tiles and provides specified surface-protection properties.

LOOKING AFTER THE RESULT
Cleaning can dramatically improve a roof's appearance, but it doesn't remove the conditions that originally encouraged organic growth.
Weather, shade, overhanging trees and debris remain factors to keep an eye on over time.
Cleaning removes suitable surface contamination; it doesn’t replace damaged material or repaint faded tiles.
Where included and correctly applied, biocide can help manage organic growth. No treatment should be described as making a roof permanently moss-free.
Leaves and debris can return after the cleaning visit. Maintaining drainage remains important.
If the roof remains serviceable but the tiles have lost their colour, RENOTEC may be worth discussing. It isn’t automatically required after cleaning.
YOUR QUOTE
There isn't one meaningful price for every roof. The area to be treated, access requirements, existing condition, amount of moss and any agreed treatments all affect the work involved.
Your quotation sets out the roof areas, cleaning method, preparation, debris management and any additional treatment included. Ask us to explain access costs, exclusions and the total payable before agreeing to proceed.

View All Frequently Asked QuestionsExplore the Roof-Cleaning ProcessMoss may develop where the roofing surface and surrounding conditions are suitable for growth. Shade, retained moisture and the nature of the roof material can all influence conditions. Different roof slopes may experience different levels of moss growth.
Concrete roof tiles may be suitable for professional cleaning, depending on their condition, surface characteristics and the proposed method. Any damage or deterioration should be assessed before work is agreed.
Some clay roof tiles may be suitable for appropriately selected cleaning techniques. Clay roofing varies significantly in age, surface condition and manufacture, so suitability can't be guaranteed without assessment.
Natural slate and other sensitive roof coverings require particular care. A cleaning method suitable for conventional concrete tiles may not be appropriate for slate. Material-specific assessment or a specialist contractor may be necessary.
Suitable professional cleaning may remove appropriate surface algae, lichen and other contamination. The method and achievable result depend on the roofing material and condition. Not every mark or discolouration can necessarily be removed without risk.
Duration depends on the property, roof size, contamination, access, method and weather. The proposed scheduling arrangements will be explained when the work is planned. No universal completion time can be guaranteed.
The agreed quotation should identify the work-area clean-up and relevant debris-removal arrangements. Where Roof Revival includes additional gutter clearing or exterior cleaning, the scope should also be explained before work is agreed.
Roofs containing solar panels may require additional care with access and protection of the installation. Panel cleaning, electrical work or removal and refitting of equipment must not be assumed to be included. The proposed roof cleaning must be assessed against the actual installation.
